This workshop focuses on the three fundamental skills essential to any meaningful attempt to develop an artistic potential, whether or not a person wishes to take art as a serious endeavour or simply to fulfil their wish to understand what art is all about. It is designed to provide a foundation on which you can confidently build your personal vision and style of painting, drawing or design work.
Form: Draftsmanship skills are fundamental to the visual, plastic arts. The basics of draftsmanship will be explained simply and clearly in this workshop. Participants will then have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice and correct any misjudgments or misunderstandings.
Colour: A sound understanding of colour is essential to the ability to use it effectively in an image or design. In this workshop we will look at the basics of colour mixing and see how these same principles apply to colour relationship. Yes, colour combinations that have a universal sense of rightness can be seen alongside the principles of colour mixing.
Design: Discover the principles of kinship and structure in art and design. Discover also, the relationship between our sense of aesthetic rightness and the fundamental laws that permeate all of nature.
This workshop is run by Merv Moriarty, who all his life has been and remains, a practicing artist, exhibiting in major galleries in most Australian capital cities. With an intense interest in colour as a profound visual language he has written extensively on this subject. Merv’s work is represented in major public collections, including the Art Gallery of NSW and the Queensland Art Gallery. As a teacher in art, colour and design, Merv has worked in colleges and universities, and in private art schools. In the early nineteen seventies he founded the Flying Art School now “Flying Arts” and the Brisbane Institute of Art, both of which still operate as major art education and facilitation bodies. Author of The Eye’s Mind - the artist and the draftsman recently published by Artist Education and author of the Colour Book available on DVD and soon to be published.

Below is an outline of other various workshops Merv runs. Please check back soon for the latest dates/schedules.
The Eye's Mind - the artist and the draftsman

This workshop is based on the new book by Merv Moriarty The Eye's Mind - the artist and the draftsman is about the way our vision system works and how this influences our ability to draw convincingly. It is based on the skill required to translate the three-dimensional world of your subject into a convincing two dimensional image. This workshop also focuses on a refined form of draftsmanship that unlocks the hidden structure, form and design possibilities of your visible environment. This is likely to be a most important workshop for many artists and art students.
Here you will discover and experience the essentials of good draftsmanship and see the link between this and good design. Particularly, you will find that gaining a working understanding of the mind that drives our vision will open a new world of potential for you. Beyond this you will find that having the power of good draftsmanship awakens the vision that can see beyond the surface and into the structure of your subject, a skill so important to our ability to see and to work creatively.
